1-1: What is the Document Summary System?
The primary functionality of the Document Summary System is the summarization of an English language document to produce a Short or Full summary using natural language queries or keywords; allowing the user to grasp the main ideas without reading the entire document.

1-2: What types of document file formats are supported?

Files using the following file extensions may be imported into the Document Summary System directly. Other files may be used if you convert the files to a supporting format.

Microsoft Word - Microsoft (.doc, .rtf, .docx* See Note Below)
Microsoft PowerPoint - Microsoft (.ppt and .pptx* See Note Below)
Portable Document Format - Adobe (.pdf)
Text files - (.txt)
Web Formats - (.htm, .html, .asp, and .aspx)
XML files - (.xml)

*Note: If Office 2007 is installed on your system the .docx and .pptx files may be processed directly by the Document Summary System. With Microsoft Office 2003, 2002, or 2000 versions a Compatibility Pack must be installed to read the documents with Word and PowerPoint. Once this Compatibility Pack is installed the files may be externally converted using your copy of Word and PowerPoint to .doc and .ppt formats for processing with the Document Summary System. Please refer to Microsoft for information on the Compatibility Pack. Some items, as listed at this web site, will not be recognized in the converted file.

1-3: What products are available?

There are two editions of the Document Summary System, Basic and Standard. Both provide the ability to summarize a document. The Standard Edition provides additional functionality to control the summarization process and manage multiple groups of documents.

1-4: What are some of the differences between the Basic and Standard Editions?

The Standard Edition has many more features than the Basic Edition. Among the additional useful features that come with the Standard Edition are:
Load many documents with one request:
- Load by selecting multiple files within a directory
- Load by selecting a directory
"Web Download" to directly import web page information
Summarize many documents with one request
Rank documents relative to each other based on Query or Keywords  
Display information about each document in a Project:
- Document's Name
- Document's Summarization Status
- Document's Size
- Document's Title
- Document's Ranking
“Open Original” displays the original document that was imported
Project Management Capability:
- Create multiple Projects
- Retrieve and manage multiple documents and summaries within each Project
- Save documents and summaries between executions
- Annotate and save comments for each document
- Project reporting
- Set global Queries and Keywords for all documents within a project and/or for specific summaries
Customize the summarization settings to fine tune results:
- The number of sentences in the Short Summary
- The relative size of the Full Summary
- The bias to be used for the Query and Keywords when selecting sentences for the Summaries

1-5: How are the products licensed?

The license for either the Basic or Standard Editions of the Document Summary System allow for a use of a single machine. The single system licensing is controlled by use of a unique Activation Code that is tailored to the system being activated. Since a license and Activation Code is required for each system, you would need a second license for another machine.

Should you purchase a new computer system to replace your current one; or you must reload the operating system because of a failure, please contact Clearly Understood, 912-419-8000, and ask for Customer Support for special instructions if your Document Summary System's Activation Code no longer works.

1-6: How is the Document Summary System delivered?

The program may be downloaded from the Document Summary System web site at: www.documentsummary.com. There are two files for each product. One contains Microsoft Net Framework 2.0 for users that do not already have this installed. It is a larger download, so a version without the framework is also provided. When going to the download page of the web site, you will be presented the recommended download for your system. You can always download the one containing the Microsoft Net Framework 2.0, if it is already on your system, the installation program will not try to install it again.

1-7: Can the product be tried before it is purchased?

Yes, just download the Document Summary System installation file and install it. When the Document Summary System is started you are given the choice to begin a Trial. While connected to the Internet select “Trial”, and then provide the requested registration information. Your Trial Activation Code will be e-mailed to you immediately. Copy and paste this Activation Code into the Document Summary System’s Activation Page and select “Activate” to start the Trial.

All product features are activated during the seven day trial period.

1-8: How can the Document Summary System be purchased?

If you used the trial, just start the Document Summary System and navigate to Product Activation. Click on Purchase while connected to the Internet. Update your Registration information if necessary, and purchase your license using most major Credit Cards; or if a corporate purchase the Corporate Purchase Information.

If you did not use the trial, downloading the installation program, install the Document Summary System. When the Document Summary System is started you are given the choice to Purchase. While connected to the Internet select Purchase, provide the requested registration information, and provide the credit card or corporate purchase information.

Your Purchased activation code will be e-mailed to you. Copy this code and paste it into the Document Summary System’s Activation Page and select “Activate” to use the Document Summary System.
